Apollo and Lily Marlene create an Installation with paintings at the Thought Gallery, Hollywood.

"We wanted to create a perfect environment for the paintings to hang in, rather than just boring white walls.  We took a section of the Gallery and painted it reminiscent to what a 'movie-screen' Castle scene would've looked like in the late 60s if you were watching an exploitation picture.  I was inspired by Z-Man Barzells' mansion in Russ Meyer's 'Beyond the Valley of the Dolls' and a few Argento films from the 70s."

THE PAINTINGS (click on the above 'PAINTINGS' tab for close up pictures.)

Celebrating the naivete and decadent lifestyle of the Adult Industry in the 1960s and 70s, painter Apollo Staar, has created a new series of paintings that pay tribute to the exploitative adult film posters from that era.  Combining bold colors and eye-catching headlines with images from classic Hollywood Movie Monsters, these paintings capture the essence of the times and add a new take on Horror films gone “Adult”.

Each painting is entirely made by hand from inception to completion.  From the personal choosing of the Douglas Fir panels that form the base, to the entire graphic and color layout of the paintings, to the multi-stage coating procedure of the final finished painting.  Each painting background is first hand cut and sanded, the backing is then nailed and glued on, then double primed and then coated in black acrylic paint.  The layout and colour scheme are then selected and go thru a variety of different assemblages until a perfect layout is chosen.  The layering of the painting then begins.  Finally, a Polymer Resin is used as a final coat and archivally seals the paintings.  Each painting is an Original work.

This collection is a series of 8 original paintings which can be purchased individually or as an entire limited collection.

Back at the studio, the paintings await the final touches.

March 2008

Apollo is currently putting together a series of new Mixed Media Photo Paintings, which combine real photography, acrylic paint, resin, and polyurethane arranged over a painted natural Birch wood background.

The following photographs are some examples of the steps taken for making the pieces.

1) First the acetate of the subject is laid over a blank background and the graphic pattern of the background is conceived. Then the background is hand painted and left to dry.

2) Then the a coat of resin is added and placed to be dried.

3) The northeast corner of Ultrastar Studio serves as the Plastic Surgery Ward for Apollo's Paintings.
Photobucket

4) Clients on the surgery table await perfection.
Photobucket

5) The acetate is then highlighted with Conte Crayon and is now ready for mounting. This photographic image is of underground filmmaker, Nick Zedd, from the Cinema of Transgression film movement, early 1980s.
Photobucket

6) At this time, any white backgrounds that will give the photo a outer glow and bright background, are painted as well as any touch-ups needed before the mounting of the acetate.

Photobucket

7) The image is then placed over a new coating of Polyurethane and then set to dry.
Photobucket

8) A final 3 coats of Polyurethane are then layered over the next few days to seal in the image and make it impermeable from dust and aging, as well as preserving it to archival standards.
